How 15 Minutes of Activity a Day Can Save Your Life

One thing that is hard for us all is making healthy decisions after a hard day of work. By the time you get to Thursday the motivation may be strong but the persistence might be wearing thin. As a health care professional the health and well being of my patients is extremely important to me. A challenge I am consistently faced with is: "but how can I stay healthy if I am too busy?"

 

Most people don't worry about their health until they start feeling pain or discomfort, or worse yet become diagnosed with a condition. But once that occurs you have to make drastic life style changes to attempt to reverse the damage that has been done for neglecting the body's well-being and health. 

 

There are numerous claims, 15 minutes of: yoga, meditation, you-time, exercise, snack prep, family time, health related activities can create huge benefits in daily life. How can you fit 15 minutes of every "important" thing into your day without another area suffering or falling behind?

 

Do you pick one, the one you think is most important? The best rated? The one your friend suggested? How do you pick the right one? Are there activities that can cover all the bases?

 

An endless stream of questions follow along with the stress of picking the "best" option to try and commit to despite a hectic schedule. Before we go down that road let's establish the why. Why is it important to take at least 15 whole minutes a day to take care of your health.

 

First of all you get one body in this life, one that serves you from the day you are born to the day you die. The better care you take of yourself the higher your quality of life will be, both today and for years to come. Secondly it is much easier to prevent than to "fix" a medical condition could have occurred in part from small daily decisions that add up overtime. Caring for yourself is not self-indulgent, it is self-preservation, it is survival. 

 

Fifteen minutes of self-care a day in the form of physical activity, lowers your risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, vascular disease and depression. Only fifteen minutes of activity a day can improve your mental, physical and emotional health. Fifteen minutes a day is an act of self-preservation, self-care, self-health, crucial to living a happy and healthy life. 

 

No, you don't have to do yoga, or a HIIT workout every single day. Some days what you might need is a 15 minute walk outside in nature with the peace and quite. Gentle activity is still important activity.

 

Here are some of my favorite ways to spend my 15 minutes of activity a day.

 

1. A quick kettle bell workout when I am feeling energized and determined.

2. Yoga when I am feeling wound up or edgy.

3. Walking when I am feeling tired and in need of a mental break.

4. Tai Chi when I need balance and stress relief.

5. A run when I feel like a need a quick head clear to take on the world.

6. Indoor Rowing when it's too weather outside but I feel like an adventure.

7. Dancing because it bring joy and laughter and make me feel good.
